of Northwest Missouri McIlwaine's Bend |
As the Prophet and others began their return to Kirtland in August 1831, the took to boats on the Missouri River (the 1830's equivalent of an interstate highway). After two days of progress, one of the boats nearly foundered after running into a tree that was stuck in the bottom-mud of the river, and whose branches were weaving in the current. The Prophet and Sidney Rigdon were among those who nearly drowned as they were tossed in the water by the boat's motion.
At this occurrence, many of the brethren in the party had experiences that caused them to fear travelling on the Missouri any further. Some of them told of hearing the "noise of the evil one." W. W. Phelps saw a vision of "the destroyer in his most horrible power" riding upon the waters. The brethren beached their canoes and camped for the night here at McIlwaine's Bend.
The next day, the Prophet shared a revelation concerning the leaders of the Church travelling on the water. It is in the Doctrine and Covenants today as Section 61.

The picture above both show McIlwaine's Bend in the distance. The bottom one was taken from the Highway 41 Bridge across the Missouri at Miami, Missouri. The top picture was taken (leaning out over the river) at the boat ramp in Miami. Miami is in Saline County, but the north bank of the river is Carroll County. Route 41 runs due north from Marshall, which can be reached via US 65 from Interstate 70.
