 Gilbert & Whitney's Store

What was the Gilbert & Whitney Store in the 1830's, actually began as the Jackson County Courthouse when it was built in 1827 and early 1828 by Daniel P. Lewis. A sign at the corner of Lynn and Lexington marks the spot where the building originally was. Today the building is at 107 W. Kansas St., where it was moved in 1916.

Smallwood Noland bought the building along with and acre and a half of land, and rented it out to a saddlemaker until February 1832, when he sold it to Gilbert & Whitney Mercantile.  The building in its current location again was a courtroom in the 1920's and 30's. One of the judges to sit the bench in this courtroom was a young lawyer by the name of Harry S. Truman, who later became President of the United States.

The picture above was taken from a parking lot to the southwest of the building, to show how deep the building actually is.
