of Northwest Missouri William E. McLellin |
Woodlawn Cemetery, Noland Road, Independence
One of the original members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in this dispensation is buried in Independence, not far from the temple site. William Earl McLellin, as the marker placed at his gravesite by the Missouri Mormon Frontier Foundation indicates, was baptized by Hyrum Smith in Jackson County, Missouri in 1831, and served missions with such luminaries as the Patriarch, Samuel Smith, and Parley P. Pratt.

Unfortunately, Elder McLellin became disaffected from the Church Leadership during the trials of the Missouri Period and was excommunicated at the same time as several of the Whitmers. He never returned to the Church. McLellin died in Independence in 1883. He is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery on Noland Road (see entrance above), not much more than a mile from the Temple Lot. Below is the original headstone erected for him. the MMFF marker is at the foot of the grave.
