 School In Zion Monument

In August of 1831, the Prophet Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon and other Church leaders came to Jackson County Missouri for a Conference, during which the Lord promised to reveal the physical location of City of Zion. This plaque commemorates the laying of a log by twelve of the brethren on August 2, 1831, to symbolize the laying of the foundation of Zion in Kaw Township, Jackson County. Today this part of the county is better known as Kansas City. The building that was built on that log became the center of activity for the Colesville Branch, besides being a meetinghouse for church meetings, the cabin also was the first school in Kansas City, Missouri.

Today, a denuded stone stands at the corner of Lake St. and The Paseo, in the northern section of Troost Park in Kansas City, at the south end of a lake. This apparently is where the monument stood. The granite stone appears to have had a large plaque removed from it.

Update!!! The Church is in the process of replacing this monument. Check back throughout the month of July 2000 for updates and a new picture of the restored School in Zion Monument!
